Freedom, Development and the India We Share

On this our 80^th Independence Day, we thank God for India, for the freedom secured at great cost, and for the generations that have carried the work of nation-building forward since 1947.

As India looks to the future, we should continue to ask what development truly means. It is not only about what a nation builds, produces or achieves. Its real measure is whether progress reaches ordinary lives, enlarging opportunity, strengthening dignity and giving people greater confidence in their future and their freedom.

For Christians, this concern is rooted in Scripture. The prophet Jeremiah calls God’s people to “seek the peace and prosperity of the city” where they have been placed. Our faith therefore cannot be separated from the wellbeing of our neighbours or from the flourishing of the society we share.

Indian Christians have never been spectators to the building of India. Across generations, we have educated, healed, served, built institutions and stood with communities, often far from the centres of power. We remain committed to the nation we have helped build and whose future we share.

We Indians do not need sameness in order to be one nation. Our strength lies in being able to share a common life across differences of faith, language, culture and conviction. But that shared life is possible only when those differences can be lived freely and without fear.

Our freedom cannot finally be measured only by what the law promises, but also by how freely people are actually able to live. The promise of Independence is fulfilled more fully when every citizen can belong, believe and participate in the life of the nation without fear.

Eighty years after Independence, may we work together to build an India where progress deepens human flourishing, where freedom belongs equally to all, and where every citizen can hold their head high.
