• Affirmation of National Identity and Freedom of Conscience

The Evangelical Fellowship of India affirms its deep commitment to the nation and honours the sacrifices that shaped India’s freedom movement.

We express our full and unreserved respect for the national anthem, Jana Gana Mana, which is an inclusive expression of India’s unity and has provided a common ground on which citizens can gather together.

We understand and respect the place of Vande Mataram in galvanising many during the freedom struggle. At the same time, we recognise that concerns regarding several of its verses have long been acknowledged in the national life, both during the freedom movement and in independent India, particularly in view of their devotional imagery.

India’s shared public expressions have drawn their strength from their ability to unite all, rather than to test the conscience of any.

We believe that expressions of patriotism carry their deepest meaning when they are freely embraced, in a manner that respects the faith and conscience of all.

The Evangelical Fellowship of India remains committed to contributing to the life of the nation through prayer, service, and active citizenship.
