    Lent Devotional: Day 30
    Be Clean!
    Rev. Dr. Samuel Richmond

    Bible Passage: Mark 1: 40-45
Theme Verse – Vs. 41 “He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”

Jesus’ teaching was not only centered on the forgiveness of sins through repentance but also on giving abundant life, where humans flourish in God’s Kingdom. After driving out an impure spirit from a man and healing many people, Jesus turned to a leper and cleansed him. In chapter 1, Mark highlights two types of cleansing: spiritual cleansing, which Jesus performed for the man afflicted by an impure spirit, and physical healing, which He granted to the man suffering from leprosy. The Bible consistently portrays God’s Kingdom as a place of absolute purity and holiness, where nothing impure can thrive. Jesus’ ministry was the visible expression of God’s Kingdom, where restoration, healing, and purity became realities for those who encountered Him. Therefore God wants his people to live a clean and pure life. The Greek word for clean is Katharos means pure, without stain or spot.

According to Mark 1:28, news of Jesus’ power spread throughout the region, and it is likely that the man suffering from leprosy also heard about Him. In verse 40, this man came to Jesus, fell on his knees, and pleaded, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” Through his posture and plea, not only he demonstrated his deep reverence and unwavering faith in Jesus’ power to heal but also sought His will for his condition. Jesus’ response reveals the heart of God’s will. With deep compassion, He replied, “I am willing. Be clean!” (v. 41). This moment brought light to the man. God’s will gave restoration and wholeness to him. Our loving God does not withhold His goodness when it aligns with His divine purpose. He has the power to fulfill our deepest needs which he grant us in accordance with His perfect will. As we draw near to God’s Kingdom, His will shapes our lives and leading us into the abundant life. When we surrender to Him, we experience not only physical healing but also spiritual renewal, walking in the fullness of His grace and purpose.

Jesus not only showed compassion by cleansing the man of leprosy but also exercised wisdom in managing public perception at the start of His ministry. He sternly warned the man to remain silent and follow the proper legal and religious process for being declared clean as mentioned in Leviticus 14:1-32. This was not to conceal His power but to prevent misunderstandings and premature opposition. Jesus knew that unnecessary publicity could hinder His mission, stirring controversy before the appointed time. However, the healed man openly shared his miracle, making it difficult for Jesus to enter the town freely. Jesus’ focus was not just on miracles but on transforming hearts and reconciling people to God through the gospel. As believers, we must exercise discernment—knowing when to speak and when to remain silent. While sharing Christ is vital, wisdom is essential. In today’s world, speaking without discernment can create unnecessary challenges. Like Jesus, we must trust God’s guidance and spread His love in His perfect timing.

Dear Lord, Cleanse us fully as You cleansed the leper. Fill us with wisdom to walk in Your will and discernment to speak in Your time. May our lives reflect Your love and truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
