    “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2

    Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

    Our hearts are heavy for the people of Nepal following the catastrophic flash floods of 26 August 2026, which have brought immense loss of life and destruction across the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli river system.

    As of the evening of 30 August, more than 780 people had been confirmed dead and over 2,500 remained missing or out of contact. Thousands have been rescued, but search operations continue and the scale of the loss is still unfolding.

    Behind every number is a person, a family and a community suddenly plunged into grief.

    The Evangelical Fellowship of India stands in prayer and solidarity with the people of Nepal and with the Church in Nepal at this painful hour.

    We have been in touch with the National Churches Fellowship of Nepal (NCF Nepal), our fellow Evangelical Alliance, whose churches and leaders are already responding among affected communities. NCF Nepal reports that between 15 and 25 churches have been destroyed or severely damaged, while pastors and church leaders are among those who have died, remain missing or have been displaced. Christian families have lost homes, livelihoods and places of worship alongside thousands of their neighbours.

    Yet even while grieving its own losses, the Church in Nepal is seeking to serve a hurting nation.

    NCF Nepal is mobilising assistance for affected families. Immediate needs include food and clean drinking water, clothing and blankets, mattresses and mosquito nets, temporary shelter, medicines and basic health supplies, lighting and cooking materials. In the months ahead, families will also need help rebuilding homes and livelihoods, while damaged churches will need to be restored.

    A Call to Prayer

    EFI calls upon churches, Christian organisations, fellowships and families across India to remember Nepal earnestly in prayer.

    Please pray:

    • For families mourning those who have died, that God will comfort them in their immeasurable grief;
    • For the thousands still missing or out of contact, and for families waiting anxiously for news;
    • For those who are injured, displaced or have lost their homes and livelihoods;
    • For the Government of Nepal, security forces, rescue teams, medical personnel and volunteers serving under extremely difficult conditions;
    • For safe access to communities that remain difficult to reach, and for protection from further floods and landslides;
    • For pastors, church leaders and congregations who are themselves grieving and displaced, that God will give them strength, wisdom and courage;
    • For the National Churches Fellowship of Nepal, the Nepal Christian Society and the wider Church in Nepal, that they may serve their neighbours with compassion, without distinction, and bear faithful witness to Christ in this hour of suffering;
    • And for the long work of rebuilding communities, homes, livelihoods and places of worship after the immediate emergency has passed.

    NCF Nepal has itself asked the wider Church to pray for bereaved families, those still missing, pastors and congregations navigating the crisis, and all those involved in rescue and relief.

    A Call to Stand With Nepal

    We also encourage churches, Christian organisations and individual believers who are able to do so to consider standing with the people of Nepal through practical support.

    Rather than creating a parallel relief structure, EFI is standing with NCF Nepal, which is working through churches and local networks in the affected areas. These are leaders and communities who know the people they serve and who will remain with them through the difficult months of recovery and rebuilding.

    Churches, organisations and individuals wishing to contribute are encouraged to contact NCF Nepal directly for guidance on how best to support the relief and recovery effort. Those wishing to make a financial contribution from India should do so through appropriate banking channels and in accordance with applicable Indian regulations.

    Nepal is our neighbour, and the Church in Nepal is part of our family in Christ. In these days of grief, let there be no distance between us. Let us pray, let us give, and let us stand with them, not only while this tragedy is in the headlines, but through the long work of recovery and rebuilding that lies ahead.

    May the Lord have mercy upon Nepal, comfort those who mourn, protect those who serve, and make His Church an instrument of hope and healing.
