Bishop Ezra Sargunam, ECI, Obituary, Tribute
The Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI) deeply mourns the passing of Bishop Ezra Sargunam, the first Bishop of the Evangelical Church of India (ECI). Bishop Sargunam, lovingly called Father Bishop by ECI members and leaders, departed this life on September 22, 2024, at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering faith, visionary leadership, and tireless service to the Christian community in India.
Bishop Sargunam was a pioneering force in Indian Christianity, known for his passionate evangelism, church planting initiatives, and advocacy for social justice. Throughout his life, Bishop Sargunam demonstrated a remarkable commitment to inclusivity and empowerment within the church. His efforts to uplift marginalized communities, including Scheduled Castes, minorities, and tribals, were widely recognized and respected.
Bishop Sargunam’s influence extended beyond the church walls. He was a bridge-builder between faith and politics, engaging with national leaders to advocate for the rights of Christians and other minority groups. His close association with tall political figures like the late M. Karunanidhi showcased his ability to navigate complex social and political landscapes for the betterment of his community.
As a visionary leader, Bishop Sargunam played a crucial role in shaping the mission strategy of the Indian church. His 1986 Mission Mandate became a cornerstone document for mission studies and inspired many young people to dedicate their lives to Christian service.

His fearless proclamation of the Gospel, coupled with his heart for social justice, set a powerful example for us all. We are grateful for his life and legacy, which will continue to inspire generations of believers to come.”
