Activists allegedly from the BJP, stormed a Christian prayer meeting in Mailani town of Lakhimpur-Kheri district of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on August 8, 2010. Speaking to Mrs. Tehmina Arora of EFI, Robert W. Samson, Pastor, Life Prayer Centre, said, “over 25 BJP activists gathered around the church at approximately 11am on Sunday morning. Though the worship service was in progress in the church, they kept shouting slogans and insisted that I come out from the church.” The police which accompanied the mob, took Pastor Robert to the police station for questioning and dispersed the over 600 strong congregation which had gathered from the worship service. Allegedly, the police threatened to shut down the church and prohibited the congregation from gathering there next Sunday. Pastor Robert was released by the police late afternoon. The police have not registered a complaint in the matter. The BJP activists were till late afternoon making public announcements in the town of forcible conversions by Pastor Robert using a loudspeaker. Many of the congregation members are new converts and from different faith backgrounds. Pastor Roberts insists that the people come because they have found healing in their lives. “They start arriving on Saturday night itself, for the Sunday worship, no one forces them, and they come on their own” he said.
